The School of Tivaouane

The Islamic education system founded by El Hadji Malick Sy

A Center of Excellence

El Hadji Malick Sy (1855-1922) established in Tivaouane a major Islamic teaching center that profoundly transformed religious education in Senegal and West Africa.

After staying in Mauritania and settling successively in Saint-Louis, Louga and Pire, El Hadji Malick Sy settled permanently in Tivaouane in 1902, at the invitation of the notable Djibril Guèye. His first reflex was the construction of a mosque in 1904, which became the heart of his educational system.

A Decentralized System

From Tivaouane, El Hadji Malick Sy deployed a decentralized teaching system with daaras (Quranic schools) established in several regions of Senegal and French West Africa.

His teaching was first articulated in an itinerant manner, then gradually anchored in Tivaouane, becoming a major factor in the spread of Quranic science and Islamization in Senegal during the last quarter of the 19th century.

He instituted an innovative tutoring system where the most advanced students supervised newcomers, thus allowing rapid expansion of the number of disciples and efficient transmission of knowledge.

Educational Geostrategy

El Hadji Malick Sy developed a true geostrategy by placing lieutenants (Mouqaddams) everywhere in Senegal and in the territories of French West Africa.

For example, in 1920, of the thirty daaras recorded in the Cap-Vert region, twenty-seven were led by his former disciples. This statistic testifies to the extent of his educational influence.

He also sent cadres outside Senegal, particularly to Mali, Ivory Coast and Gabon, thus creating a transnational Islamic educational network that continues to radiate today.

An Inclusive Approach

Although the initiator of the Tijaniyya brotherhood in Senegal (he returned from Mecca in 1888 with the title of Khalifa of the Tidjaniya), El Hadji Malick Sy favored the general spread of Islam rather than that of a single brotherhood.

This inclusive approach allowed him to rally various communities without creating inter-brotherhood rivalries. His goal was to raise the spiritual and intellectual level of all Muslims, regardless of their brotherhood affiliation.

This universalist vision of Islamic education remains the distinctive mark of the Tivaouane school today.

Educational Legacy

Tivaouane became the heart of his religious and educational movement, with the construction of his zawiya (religious institution), now a listed historical site.

His influence endures through the Quranic schools that bear his name and continue to welcome learners in the tradition he established. The daara of the zawiya El Hadji Malick Sy in Tivaouane remains a beacon of Islamic education.

Each year, graduation ceremonies (Quran celebrations) celebrate learners who have memorized the holy book, thus perpetuating the educational tradition founded by Maodo.
