The ritual practices and celebrations of the Tijaniyya
The religious ceremonies of the Tijaniyya in Tivaouane are characterized by a rich tradition of spiritual practices including bourde (recitation of poems in honor of the Prophet), khassaides (qasidas in Arabic), wird (obligatory daily recitations), wazifa (specific Tijane prayers) and Hadratoul Jummah.
These ceremonies, rooted in the heritage founded by El Hadji Malick Sy, gather thousands of faithful in an atmosphere of fervor and devotion. They represent the living heart of Tidjane spirituality.
The Bourde (or Burd) refers to extended sessions of reciting poems praising Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). These moving and collective vigils take place mainly in the zawiyas.
During the Gamou, Bourde nights follow one another (3rd night, 4th night, etc.), with recitation of different chapters. Songs like "Moulay saly salam daiman abadan" create an atmosphere of intense contemplation.
Each session usually concludes with a collective wazifa. The bourde transcends brotherhood barriers and brings together faithful of all origins in the common celebration of the Prophet.
Khassaides are religious poems composed in classical Arabic, usually in honor of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) or the saints of the Tijaniyya.
El Hadji Malick Sy himself authored many khassaides, including the famous "Qilasu thahab" (The decanted gold). These poems are recited during religious ceremonies and passed down from generation to generation.
Reciting khassaides is considered an act of devotion that brings blessings (baraka) to the reciter and the assembly. It allows meditation on the virtues of the Prophet and the saints.
Hadratoul Jummah ("Friday Presence") is a weekly ceremony that gathers the faithful for a collective session of dhikr and prayers.
It includes:
• Collective recitation of the wird
• Invocations specific to the Tijaniyya
• Recitation of khassaides
• Prayers for the community and the country
This ceremony strengthens fraternal bonds between disciples and helps keep spiritual practice alive throughout the year, outside of major events like the Gamou or Ziarra.

Tijaniyya ceremonies are characterized by an atmosphere of contemplation, fervor and fraternity. The faithful, often dressed in white (symbol of purity), gather in zawiyas or mosques to experience these spiritual moments together.
The atmosphere combines recitation, singing, rhythmic applause and moments of meditative silence. The spiritual presence of great guides like Serigne Abdoul Aziz Sy Al Amine is felt through their teachings transmitted by their representatives.
These events, organized by cells like the Zawiya Tijaniyya, combine spirituality, Arabic literature and social cohesion, positioning Tivaouane as an ardent center of Senegalese Tijaniyya.
