The annual pilgrimages to the tombs of the saints of Tivaouane
Ziarra (زيارة, "visit" in Arabic) is a spiritual pilgrimage consisting of visiting the tombs of saints and marabouts to pray, meditate and renew one's spiritual commitment.
The General Ziarra of Tivaouane is a major annual event for the Tidjane community, initiated in 1930 by Serigne Babacar Sy, first khalifa of Sheikh El Hadj Malick Sy. It aims to strengthen the allegiance (moubaya) and commitment (kolëré) of the faithful to their spiritual guides.
This event attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over Senegal and the diaspora who gather at the mausoleums of Tivaouane.

The General Ziarra typically extends over several days with a rich program:
Friday: Gamou in honor of Sokhna Oumoul Khairy Sy (wife of El Hadji Malick Sy).
Saturday: Panels and conferences on spiritual and social themes. For example, in 2025, a panel on funding opportunities for dahiras (religious associations) with experts in Islamic finance and waqf.
Sunday (main day): Official ceremony with Quran reading, collective prayers, praises to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), renewal of the allegiance pact to the general khalifa, and massive visits to the tombs.
The organizing committee, supported by the Zawiya Tijaniyya Cell, emphasizes discipline, road safety and religious unity.
Ziarra is much more than a simple visit to tombs. It represents:
• A renewal of spiritual commitment to the tariqa
• An opportunity for spiritual refreshment
• A moment of fraternal communion among the faithful
• A demonstration of fidelity to the teachings of the saints
• A time of prayer to ask for blessings (baraka)
Contemplation at the mausoleums allows the faithful to connect with the spiritual heritage of the great masters of the Tijaniyya and to draw from their wisdom to face the challenges of daily life.
The organization of the Ziarra mobilizes significant logistical resources to welcome pilgrims:
• Special train services for pilgrim transportation
• Arrangement of reception and prayer spaces
• Security and medical services
• Accommodation and catering for visitors
• Communication and information for the faithful
The Zawiya Tijaniyya Cell (CEZAT) plays a central role in coordinating the event, ensuring the smooth running of ceremonies and welcoming pilgrims under the best conditions.
It is important to distinguish the General Ziarra from the Gamou:
• The Ziarra is a separate event, usually organized in spring (April)
• The Gamou celebrates the birth of the Prophet and follows the lunar calendar (12th night of Rabi' al-Awwal)
• The Ziarra focuses on renewing allegiance to the khalifa
• The Gamou focuses on praises to the Prophet and spiritual vigils
Both events attract large crowds and testify to the vitality of the Tidjane community of Tivaouane, but they have distinct objectives and rituals.
