The Literary Heritage of El Hadji Malick Sy
El Hadji Malick Sy was not only a spiritual guide, but also a prolific author. Despite his many responsibilities, he left a considerable literary work that testifies to his mastery of Islamic sciences and his mystical depth.
Important note: Many of Maodo's manuscripts have been lost or scattered. An effort to collect and digitize them is underway to preserve this precious heritage.

A poetic masterpiece composed of thirty sections dedicated to celebrating the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). All verses end with the letter 'M', hence its popular name 'Mi-Mi-Ya'. Considered an unparalleled literary monument in evoking the Prophet's life and praising him.
Importance : Sung, translated and commented during Gamou celebrations throughout Senegal. Translated into French by El Hadji Idrissa Mbengue Salif and Maodo Mbengue.

Maodo's most famous work. This treatise addresses the general principles of the Tijaniyya Tariqa and the discipline required of the murid (spiritual aspirant). The work concludes with a section on 'The Divergence among the Saints of God', reflecting Maodo's characteristic open-mindedness towards different spiritual paths.
Importance : Fundamental text studied in all Tijani daaras, practical guide for any spiritual aspirant

Essential treatise covering a wide range of Sufi themes including asceticism (Zuhd), social relations (Mu'amalat) and the relationship with God. Maodo frequently uses poetic verse for pedagogical purposes to facilitate memorization.
Importance : Spiritual encyclopedia serving as a reference for the training of disciples

Arabic treatise defending the Tijaniyya Tariqa and Sunni Sufism (tasawwuf as-sunni) against its detractors. The work comments on the Jawharat al-Kamal to highlight orthodox Sufism and its textual basis, positioning the Tijaniyya as a legitimate path.
Importance : Demonstration of Maodo's erudition and mastery of Islamic sciences
وسيلة المنى (التيسير)

Khassida (Sufi panegyric poem) aimed at achieving the fulfillment of wishes through the invocation of Allah's Beautiful Names. This poem expresses total submission to God and the believer's spiritual quest.
Importance : Regularly recited by the faithful, available with transcription and French translation

Exhortation of hearts. Spiritual treatise on the purification of the soul and the awakening of hearts to divine reality.
Importance : Guide for the inner transformation of the disciple
Complete collection of Maodo's poetry, including poems about the Prophet, Sheikh Ahmed Tijani and El Hadji Oumar Foutiyou Tall. New seven-volume edition published in Morocco in 2022 for the centenary of his passing.
Work available in French translation, part of Maodo's literary corpus.
