The holy places of Tijaniyya in Tivaouane
Tivaouane, located in northwestern Senegal near Thiès, is a major center of sacred geography for the Tijaniyya brotherhood. This holy city is marked by prestigious holy places: the mosque and zawiya of El Hadji Malick Sy, his mausoleum, and other religious sites that attract millions of pilgrims every year.
These elements structure the territorial and spiritual identity of the city since the arrival of El Hadji Malick Sy in 1902, transforming Tivaouane into a major center of Tidjane Islam with a religious landscape organized around these sacred buildings.
Former capital of the Kingdom of Cayor (recorded as early as the 15th century), Tivaouane is now part of the Thiès department. Its population has grown from 7,900 inhabitants in 1960 to about 100,000, multiplied by 50 during major religious events like the Gamou.
Built in 1904 by El Hadji Malick Sy (Seydil Hadj Malick Sy), this mosque is a central historical and spiritual heritage of the Tijaniyya. It has been modernized over the years to accommodate the ever-growing number of faithful.

Launched in 1978 by Serigne Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh, the construction of the Grand Mosque of Tivaouane represents a monumental project for the Tidjane community. This ambitious project aims to create a prayer space capable of accommodating millions of faithful during major gatherings.
The Serigne Babacar Sy mosque, along with other religious buildings, marks the urban landscape of Tivaouane and testifies to the dynamism of the Tidjane community.
All these sites were listed in 2003 on the list of Senegalese Historical Monuments, recognizing their exceptional heritage and spiritual value.

The city maintains strong historical ties with Morocco (Fez zawiya) and other Arab countries, strengthening its international influence within the global Tijaniyya.
